Buy Lemonade from Kid’s Lemonade Stand

Nothing says “It’s Summer” better than a kid selling lemonade along the road.

We were taking a Sunday drive around town and just happened to pass this young entrepreneur. We did a quick U-turn, rolled down our windows and demanded drive-thru service.

The young boy came over to our car and informed us a cup of lemonade was 25 cents! We ordered four. Connie dug through her change purse for enough money.

We asked the lemonade seller how business was going and he responded, “Ehh…”

For the drive-thru service we gave him a 100% tip. And continued on our Sunday drive enjoying the lemonade.

Drink a Mint Julep & Bet on a Horse at the Kentucky Derby

We attended the 138th Kentucky Derby on Saturday May 5, 2012.

Almost right away we bought $11 mint juleps that were served in a collectors glass. While sipping on the mint juleps we stood in line to make bets on the horses. We picked out two horses: Daddy Long Legs and Creative Cause. We bet $6 on each to Win, Place and show.

The infield is not a great place for watching the horse races but it sure is a great place for people watching. We walked around a bit and then found a tiny plot of grass to rest and relax.

And there were some great people to see…

And I even found a larger hat!

We ended up leaving the Derby due to the temperature, it was hot!

We watched the race in our friends’ living room a block away from Church Hill Downs. And our horses did not win, in fact Daddy Long Legs was last!

Celebrate Obscura Day

We celebrated Obscura day by exploring Allen Christian’s House of Balls in Minneapolis.  If you are unfamiliar with Obscura Day check out http://atlasobscura.com/

We decided when we saw this truck we must be close.

We saw the sign and went to the door.  A person wearing a very large colander like headpiece opened the door and motioned us in.  It was strange and intriguing.

The house of balls is full of Allen Christian’s art… and it is quite the trip.  There is something to look at everywhere.

One of my favorite parts, Allen had cemented a gravestone that a friend gave him in the floor of the threshold between the front room and back.  Allen said he had done some genealogy on the names and couldn’t find anything, so more than likely the gravestone was probably a misprint or the couple decided they weren’t going to die.

Other highlights included the organized boxes in the basement that were labeled things like bones, and old doctors instruments.

Later that day we ended up in Iowa and decided to continue Obscura day by discovering our own kooky place.  We drove through a person’s car cemetery.

Attend an “Outsider Musical”: FUTURITY

The Lisps are a band and more. They are “New York-based co-ed assemblage of 21st century theater prone indie rockers.”

César Alvarez who is vocals & guitar in the band wrote the musical ‘FUTURITY,’ Which has evolved over the past four years from a concert to a musical.

We went to the Friday night show at the Walker Art Center not knowing what to expect.

And what it was, was a creative musical. And I’m not really into musicals, but this was worth seeing.

The creativity involved in this show was incredible. Check out the trailer below:

Define Yourself in One Word

We are Neophiles.

Back in February we read a great New York Times article about novelty seekers.  And it just might be in our genes. But not in a negative way, novelty seeking is a good thing.

“Novelty-seeking is one of the traits that keeps you healthy and happy …” C. Robert Cloninger. (from the article)

The article points out that humans need neophiles.  For example, Mr. Christopher Columbus had to have been a neophile and because of his adventurous side we have ‘The New World.’  Other innovations and discoveries were more than likely because of someone who thrived on change.  Not only that, but people who were more adapt to change were able to deal with climate changes and survive, thereby keeping the human lineage alive.

Check out the article, ‘What’s New? Exuberance for Novelty Has Benefits‘ by John Tierney

A couple of quotes we love:

‎”I want movement and not a calm course of existence.” – Leo Tolstoy

When you’re always trying to conform to the norm, you lose your uniqueness, which can be the foundation for your greatness.” -Dale Archer

Attend a Gallery Talk

David Lefkowitz talked about his art and other pieces in the Walker Art Center’s ‘Lifelike’ exhibit.  Lefkowitz’s pieces in the exhibit were paintings of outlets, wall sockets, thermostats and other wall fixtures.  Lefkowitz’s works were placed around the exhibit, some in such a way that required a double take to determine if it was art or a real fixture.

Can you tell which fixture below is art?

In the top row of fixtures the one farthest to the right is one of Lefkowitz’s pieces.

Lefkowitz’s lecture focused on the concept of perception of what is art.

And there were lots of pieces in the exhibit that played with that very question.  Like that comb.

And these elevators… which from this picture don’t look very artsy… but see below.

Mini elevators!

And check out this guy…

No, really check him out…

He’s art!  And he was made with such an amazing attention to detail.

And one more of Lefkowitz’s fixtures.

Change a Flat

Everybody gets flat tires once and awhile.  While it is super easy to call AAA, it is probably more efficient to just change the tire… as long as you know what you are doing. It is also fun to wait for roadside assistance, which we’ve done before waiting for gas.  Ryan decided to take on changing the tire and conquered it with ease.

We got a flat tire driving in the middle of Iowa.  And of course our trunk was full of stuff from moving and not having a house.  We emptied the trunk into the backseat in order to pull out the spare donut.  Ryan managed to change the tire quickly with only one injury and frozen hands.
