Seasons of Fun: Our 2024

Welcome to the Ferguson Museum of Self Portraits!

This year we visited La Casa Azul in Coyoacán, Mexico, which is where the artist Frida Kahlo was born and lived her entire life. La Casa Azul is now a museum. Frida Kahlo’s artwork is about 2/3 self-portraits. She once said, “I paint self-portraits because I am the person I know best.” In the spirit of Kahlo, we each composed a self portrait, because we each know ourselves the best (… although at times it seems I can predict when the kids need to eat or sleep better than they can themselves).

May our artwork give you a smile this season! Read on for a peek into what we did this past year.

We began 2024 on a bittersweet note, saying our final goodbyes to our 19 year old dog, Chata.

Winter brought plenty of snow forts, sledding, and cross-country skiing.

Spring arrived with new life as we hatched eggs in our egg-frame incubator.  We had a clutch of 7 adorable chicks.

Iola began jazz piano lessons, and all three girls are taking music lessons. A spring piano recital showcased Iola and Frida’s hard work and talent.

We traveled to see the total solar eclipse in April, viewing it from a McDonald’s parking lot in Arkansas.

In May, we ventured to Mexico City, where the vibrant culture delighted us (and Montezuma’s revenge tested us!). Highlights included a lively lucha libre match, ramen noodles and donuts at a baseball game, and, of course, countless street tacos.

The summer was spent getting tan at the pool. Iola and Frida took summer tennis lessons.

One highlight of our year was celebrating Christmas in July with the Sailing Santa crew. We built a sleigh for Grinnell’s cardboard boat regatta. Iola and Frida sailed it to a first place victory!

We had the opportunity to sculpt butter with the official Iowa State Butter Cow sculptor—an udderly amazing experience!

We have been spending Friday afternoons carving wooden spoons.

Our November travels took us to Northfield, MN, where we met one of our favorite authors, Kate DiCamillo.

We also met other amazing writers throughout the year, including Mac Barnett, Shawn Harris, Pedro Martin, and Justice Alan Page.

We joined artist Isaac Campbell in Grinnell, helping to install wheat-paste murals around town!

This fall, Iola and Frida joined the Tiger Sharks swim team. They have competed in a couple of swim meets and I’m happy to report they haven’t needed lifeguard services.

We spotted the Tsuchinshan-Atlas comet in October. Iola is getting better and better at finding things to look at with her telescope.

By November, the northern lights graced us with their ethereal beauty right here in Grinnell.

This fall, we welcomed a new international student, Suzune from Japan, into our family with our other international students: Kevin, from China, Anh, from Vietnam, and Mario, from Bulgaria.

Iola, 11

She professes to love tacos but craves a simple baked potato with cheese. She had her braces removed this spring. Iola is into typewriters. Often, in the evenings, one can hear clicking and clacking from her vintage, early 1900’s era Underwood typewriter. If she’s not writing something, she’s usually drawing a comic (often about her mom) or reading a book.

Frida, 8

Frida decided to quit shoes this year. Frida asked Santa for a real, alive tarantula this year. Instead she will be getting her adenoids removed. Frida keeps us all in line, reminding us about budgets and quoting Golda Meir, “Don’t be so humble – you are not that great.”

Fleur, 6

She’s usually the first to wake up in the morning, always with a smile. Fleur proudly upgraded to a bike with gears this year. On Fleur’s 6th birthday we went kayaking on Lake Red Rock. (She had requested a new kayak after the last inflatable kayak deflated in a freak accident with a kayak launch). Making books, pushing pandas in strollers, and playing kickball are a few of Fleur’s favorite things. She sent Santa a long, meandering list of what she wants this year. Topping the list is a “gadget” (good luck with that Santa!)

Joyful Tidings of 2023

Chata, 19, our resident food enthusiast, has officially extended her final Farewell Tour.

She celebrated her 19th birthday with a visit to Santa Claus (that’s not a euphemism); who knows the wishes she whispered to him.

Most of her time is spent napping or counting hexagons on the kitchen floor. Forever circling. Circling in on the meaning of it all.

Iola, 10, now adorned with a set of braces, has become a wizard at folding origami paper cranes and cooking up the best french toast this side of the Mississippi.

Besides collecting & reading books, Iola has started a collection of snow globes from Torre del Mar, Spain and Montreal, Canada this year.

In a heated rooftop pool, overlooking Quebec City, Iola celebrated turning 10 years old.

Her passions span a spectrum—adoring manatees, relishing the flavors of tacos, and embracing everything yellow.

While residing in Montreal, she delved into ukulele lessons (in Spanish), complementing her ongoing dedication to piano.

This Christmas, Iola is hoping to find art supplies under the tree.

Frida, 7, our nature-loving seven-year-old, thrives amidst the wonders of the great outdoors. Whether she’s scaling trees, exploring hiking trails, or scouring the beach for treasures, her happiness finds its purest form in these natural settings.

Her pet cockroaches have created a dynasty that would make even monarchs envious: seven generations and counting.

She has continued taking piano lessons. In April, Frida had her first piano recital and performed two duets—”Ode to Joy” and “Catch a Falling Star”—accompanied by Iola, marking a milestone in her musical journey.

This summer marked another triumph as Frida conquered the swim test at the pool, reveling in the exhilaration of leaping from the diving board.

Frida usually keeps us inline reminding us about budgets and questioning us, “do you really need another one of those?”

If you are lucky, Frida will throw you a wink.

Fleur, 5, is eager to lend a hand in any way she can. Fresh mangos hold the key to her heart. Whether she’s crossing her eyes, belting out tunes, or bursting into contagious belly laughs, these “Fleurisms” never fail to bring a smile to our faces.

As an aspiring paleontologist, Fleur celebrated her birthday with a dinosaur-shaped cake, perfectly embodying her fascination with prehistoric creatures.

Her knack for discovering even the tiniest pieces of sea glass astounds us, revealing her keen eye for treasures hidden in the sand.

This summer marked a milestone for Fleur as she fearlessly ditched her arm floaties and fully embraced the joy of swimming in the pool.

Fleur loves games, with Rat-A-Tat-Cat currently reigning as her top pick. This fall she discovered Bocci Ball and didn’t want to ever stop playing.

She loves chocolate of any kind and visiting playgrounds.

Ryan & Carrie are content.

Here are some photos from our 2023

And, it may be that you are wondering about that Christmas booklet story? Perhaps it was too small to even read? Here’s the story, in a larger font, complete with pictures:

As we were driving on a dusty, isolated road amidst freshly-blooming almond trees on top of a plateau headed to explore the Gorafe desert, a figure emerged on the horizon. A solitary man, with a twinkle in his eye, appeared almost magically. His silhouette beckoned us, waving in a manner that was both welcoming and curious.

Curiosity piqued, Ryan gently eased our rented Citroën SpaceTourer to a halt. As we approached, the man’s warm “Hola!” greeted us, accompanied by generous handfuls of freshly plucked rosemary from the folds of his coat. The fragrant herb perfumed the air as he shared its myriad uses, his eyes dancing with enthusiasm. “For cooking, for your car, your home – endless possibilities!” he exclaimed, his voice filled with genuine delight.

Grateful for his unexpected kindness, we bid him farewell and continued, the scent of rosemary infusing the car with its refreshing aroma. Not long after, a dusty RV rumbled past, heading in the opposite direction. Ryan flagged down the driver and passed on the gift of some of the rosemary, a token of the stranger’s warmth and the serendipitous encounter in the desert.

Our story unfolded further as we encounter a third individual on our journey—a genuine shepherd diligently tending to his flock of sheep. The shepard pointed out a good path forward for exploring the area to us. And then, amidst this pastoral scene, as it should go, one rebellious sheep decided to run off, prompting the shepherd to chase after her.

We continued on the drive in awe of the landscape. And life.

Here’s to a happy 2024! And we will leave you with this quote:

“May you always look upon the moon and the stars and the sun with wonder. May you journey out into the great wide world. And wherever you go, may you love without regret – for that is the greatest glory there is.”

Here’s what we have been up to this year:

Fleur (3) started riding a a pedal bike on her own a few days ago! She dressed up as her favorite animal, the panda, for Halloween. Jumping off of beds, chairs, and anything slightly treacherous is her idea of time well spent. She is usually searching for fossils & treasures.

Frida (5) is the proud mom of her pair of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and their intrusion of babies. Along with learning to whistle this year, Frida has enjoyed swimming, piano, ice skating, and riding her bike. Always on the lookout for a bug or tree to climb, Frida is usually one decision away from her next hospital visit. She kindly asked Santa for a wooden partridge.

Iola (8) is constantly inventing, crafting, creating, and writing. Along with skateboarding, she discovered the joy of waterslides this year. Musically prone, Iola loves playing piano & drums and is finding her way around Great Grandma’s Hammond organ. She wants to be an astronomer, but for now helps build websites and takes out the trash.

Carrie spent the entire year drawing the Merry Fergmas coloring sheet and home-schooling the kids.

Ryan (aging grays-fully) cherishes bike rides & piano time with Carrie and the kids. He’s grateful to be involved in fun projects with talented friends:

RiseCapital.fund (Investments in large apartment buildings.)

PlaidOx.com (TV Entertainment)

Chata is mostly blind, deaf, and 17 years old. She spends much of her time at the all-inclusive Ferguson Grandparent Resort in Baxter, IA. Lucky dog.

A few quick facts about Lake Superior:

(Source: http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/superior/superiorfacts.html)
  •  Lake Superior is, by surface area, the world’s largest freshwater lake. The surface area is 31,700 square miles or 82,170 square kilometers
  •  Lake Superior contains 10% of all the earth’s fresh surface water.
  • There is enough water in Lake Superior (3,000,000,000,000,000–or 3 quadrillion– gallons) to flood all of North and South America to a depth of one foot.
  • The Lake Superior shoreline, if straightened out, could connect Duluth and the Bahama Islands.
  • In the summer, the sun sets more than 35 minutes later on the western shore of Lake Superior than at its southeastern edge.
  • Water in Lake Superior is retained, on average, 191 years.
  • Some of the world’s oldest rocks, about 2.7 billion years of age, can be found on the Ontario shore of Lake Superior.

We spent three weeks driving clockwise around Lake Superior.  We started and ended our journey in Superior, Wisconsin.  We didn’t plan much and took it day by day.

 Major highlights of our trip:

-Pebble Beach in Marathon, ON.  The name “Pebble Beach” doesn’t do this beach justice.  The beach is full of what look like dinosaur egg-sized rocks.  All smooth and beautifully rounded.

-We visited all of the National parks in the US and Canada that were within the circle: Grand Portage National Monument (Grand Portage, MN), Pukaskwa National Park (Heron Bay, ON), Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (Munising, MI), Keneenaw National Historical Park (Calumet, MI), Isle Royale National Park (Houghton, MI), and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Bayfield, WI).  At each one we completed junior ranger activity booklets (or the xplorer booklets in Canada).  Iola earned 7 new badges!

-July 1st is Canada Day.  Canada Day is a day to celebrate the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the Constitution Act, 1867, which united the three separate colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada.  We celebrated the 150th Canada Day in Sault Ste. Marie.  It was fun to see all the Canada pride! We shared in the pride by wearing white and red and flying the Maple.  We enjoyed some poutine while listening to “Oh, Canada!”  Our favorite part of the day was getting our picture taken with Canada’s first woman in space, Roberta Bondar!

-We celebrated Independence Day on July 4th in Munising, MI.  We enjoyed a small town, candy-throwing parade.

Other quick stats:

1 US Dollar = 1.32 CA “Loonies”

5 Libraries visited

1 Rock Mine

23 beaches

10 Museums

Sled away a Snowy Portland Day

It snowed a historic amount in Portland- 12 inches of fluffy, white snow (on 1/11/17).

The snow took out our power for a few early morning hours while we slept.  And since we have only electric heat, we were glad when the power came back around 9:00am.  We bundled up as much as we could.  I left all our snow gear packed up in boxes in Iowa.

img_3535-2

Ryan found a cracked sled by our apartments trash cans.  We got a little more use out of it before leaving it back by the same trash cans.

We have been through quite a few snow storms but in the Midwest life doesn’t stop.  The Midwest is prepared for the snow with salt, plows and shovels.  Portland is not prepared.

img_3598-1

We headed out on a snowy walk to find unplowed streets and sidewalks.  Portlanders were out in the streets walking, skiing and snowshoeing.

Lots of snow people made us smile.  One rather large snow person built in a park wore a black wig!

That’s our car, Hank, covered in snow sitting in front of our apartment building

We are now preparing for an ice storm this afternoon.  -Carrie

Celebrate Three Kings Day

Three Kings Day is the 12th day of Christmas, typically celebrated in Spain and Latin-American countries.  I made crowns with the girls on Wednesday leading up to the day and started talking about the day.  Ryan ordered a Rosca de Reyes cake.

img_3170 Thursday night Iola lined up our boots by the back door for the Kings to leave gifts in – similar to Santa leaving gifts in stockings hung up by the chimney.  We woke up to our boots filled with gifts!  Iola received a pair of socks, orange jello, M&M’s, and lemon gum.  Frida got a dinosaur balloon and a pear.

Thursday we picked up the Rosca de Reyes cake from a Mexican Bakery in Portland.  The shelves were filled with boxed cakes.  The smell of the cake teased us the rest of the day Thursday.  It smells so good!

We found a nice little Mexican bakery – 5 de Mayo Panderia,8416 SE 32nd Ave, Portland, OR 9722

Our friends came over to eat the Rosca de Reyes cake with us.  Traditionally the Rosca de Reyes has a baby Jesus doll hidden inside of it.  Ours had three hidden in it!  Iola found the first little Jesus in her piece.  The cake is the shape of a “O” – or looks like a crown or wreath.

Happy Three Kings Day!
